Community 101 Teaches Students the Power of Giving!

Today I want to tell you about the Siletz Valley Community 101 project. The Community 101 is a program of The Oregon Community Foundation, with major funding from the PGE Foundation We, the students in the Community 101 Project at Siletz Valley Early College Academy, will work together through volunteerism and philanthropy to improve teen wellness and reduce substance abuse. Teen wellness programs will focus on bullying, racism, stress, suicide, and self-esteem issues, while substance abuse programs will help people in our community face their problems with addiction.

We want to work with as many Lincoln County non-profit organizations as possible. We have received funding that will allow us to provide funds to non-profit organizations through the grant-making process. We are especially looking for non-profits that fit our mission statement, but would also like to hear from others who are making a difference in our community.

We will start mailing grant applications to non-profit organizations on November 15th, 2011. Applications must be returned by January 31, 2012. As a class, we will review all nonprofit grant applications and rate each one based on which ones most closely meet our mission statement. An awards ceremony will take place in the spring.
